Richmond’s transitional learning program will be extended beyond its current end date of late January, said superintendent Scott Robinson at tonight’s board meeting.
“We’re in a situation that no one could have ever predicted, certainly that no one would have ever chosen for us to be in, and it has placed all school districts across the province in a difficult situation,” said Robinson.
The elementary program will be extended, with some modifications, through March 26—the end of Spring Break. There will continue to be 15 full-time teachers assigned to the program, although five new teachers will be added so that five learning services staff can return to their regular roles. School-based check-ins will be reduced in frequency from twice daily to a minimum of twice weekly, beginning in January.
The secondary program will be extended in its current instructional format through April 23, the end of the third quarter. The staffing will be reduced from 18.5 full-time teachers to five, with balancing done using additional secondary staffing resources.
Funding to pay teachers assigned to transitional learning will come from the district’s remaining federal grant funds.
