Two police officers have been charged, including one from Richmond, following a 2019 incident.
Const. Matthew McGuire of the Richmond RCMP and Const. John Tsonos of the Surrey RCMP have been charged with one count each of assault, according to an RCMP release. Both are expected to appear in court next month.
Officers from Surrey RCMP’s auto crime target team found a man in Surrey allegedly driving a stolen vehicle, and he was ultimately stopped and arrested in Richmond with assistance from the Richmond officer. During the course of taking the man into custody, the officers allegedly assaulted him.
Upon learning of the allegations, the seniors officers in charge of the Richmond and Surrey RCMP detachments initiated code of conduct investigations and criminal investigations against the officers involved. In 2020, the results of the criminal investigation were submitted to the BC Prosecution Service, and today the assault charges were approved.
Const. McGuire is on administrative duties and Const. Tsonos is suspended with pay. The RCMP release states that duty status for both police officers is continually assessed and the internal Code of Conduct investigations remain active and ongoing.
