Health authorities reported 682 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today, as the rise in case counts continues.

Fifteen of B.C.’s new cases are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, the province has recorded 93,253 cases.

Of the new cases, 229 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 333 in the Fraser Health region, 19 in the Island Health region, 76 in the Interior Health region, 23 in the Northern Health region and two new cases of people who reside outside of Canada. Health authorities said 36 of the newly reported Interior Health cases are historic cases from 2020, identified through a data review.

Along with the rise in new cases comes a four-week low in new tests, with just 6,006 reported today. That leaves the province with a 11.11 per cent positivity rate.

There are 5,409 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 314 people are hospitalized, 83 of whom are in intensive care. A further 9,488 people are under active public health monitoring.

Health authorities reported 144 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, bringing B.C.’s total to 1,510 cases. Of those, 171 cases are currently active. Of the total cases, 1,357 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 43 are the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 110 are the P.1 (Brazil) variant.

To date, 557,508 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,168 of which are second doses.

Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 1,438.

Health authorities reported no new healthcare facility outbreaks, and declared one over. Outbreaks continue at three long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and seven acute care facilities.

The provincial health officer’s order on gatherings and events was amended today to allow outdoor worship services, provided COVID-19 safety plans are in place. The full details are available online.
