More than 23,000 computers and devices are being loaned out around BC to support students learning from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now, more than ever, we must come together to help children and families who are struggling in our communities,” said Education Minister Rob Fleming. “That’s why we’re working closely with all 60 school districts to quickly provide parents and children with the supports they need to connect with each other, teachers and learning opportunities.”

Following Spring Break, school staff began contacting families to find out their needs. School districts then began creating solutions that would work best for their local communities.

Some families have no computer for children to use, or only one computer that a parent requires for full-time work. Other families have no access to technology, Wi-Fi or cellphone service.

School district staff have collected equipment already available in schools, in addition to purchasing extra computers, laptops, tablets and other devices. Staff have collaborated with Internet service providers to ensure families with inadequate Internet access have low-cost Internet or unlimited cellphone data plans.

In remote parts of the province with little or no Internet or cellphone access, education assistants have delivered printed learning packages or flash thumb drives with information for learning at home.

To support families looking for additional resources for remote learning, the Education Ministry has created the Keep Learning website, updated most days with new activities for kids of any age.
