The Public Health Agency of Canada encourages people in danger of becoming severely ill from COVID-19 to reduce their risk by taking action.
Those at high risk of developing severe complications include:
• People with medical conditions including heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), lung disease, diabetes or cancer
• People with weakened immune systems from a medical condition or treatment such as chemotherapy
• Older adults
Be prepared by staying informed, stocking up on supplies that might be necessary for a few weeks at home, and talking with your health care provider.
To reduce the risk of catching COVID-19, stay away from those who are sick and only leave home for medically necessary appointments. If contact with others cannot be avoided, keep a distance of at least two metres.
Disinfect high-touch surfaces at home daily, and follow advice from Health Canada regarding approved hard-surface disinfectants. Avoid crowds and large gatherings, and clean hands frequently.
Monitor yourself for symptoms, including a new cough or chronic cough that gets worse; a fever of 38ºC or above; or difficulty breathing. If you develop a symptom, stay home and call your health care provider or local public health unit. Before going to a health care provider or facility, always call ahead if you have symptoms of COVID-19 to prevent further exposure.
If you develop urgent symptoms—significant difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure or new confusion or difficulty waking up—call 911 and inform them that you may have COVID-19 and are at high risk for complications.
