A man has been charged after a shooting outside an airport in the Northwest Territories that sent a woman to hospital, shut down a highway and ferry, and caused residents to lock their doors.

RCMP say a 58-year-old woman was shot at the airport in Inuvik on Saturday and is in stable condition.

They say a man fled in a pickup truck and soon after a vehicle matching its description struck six people on the Dempster Highway.

Those victims were also reported to be in stable condition.

Locals were told to shelter in place, and the highway and Mackenzie Ferry were temporary closed as officers looked for a suspect.

Police say a man known to the shooting victim was arrested later in a clearing near the highway.

A 21-year-old man from Tuktoyaktuk has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, dangerous operation of a vehicle and several weapons-related offences.
