Active Mind Sets launch during Library Month

Richmond Public Library is celebrating
Canadian Library Month with the launch of Active Mind Sets.
The new collection is designed to foster
brain health and family conversations, and will be introduced Oct. 11 at the
main Brighouse branch. It will also be available to explore Oct. 18 and Oct. 25
and can be borrowed from any library branch for up to 21 days.
There are 40 different sets available to
borrow, each including two different cognitive games (for example, memory or
spatial thinking) that can be played individually or with others.
“The Active Mind Sets can be enjoyed by
anyone from the ages of eight to 98,” says Lee Anne Smith, co-ordinator of
programming and information services at Richmond Public Library. “It is
important to keep both young and aging minds strong with a variety of
activities and these interactive games will support brain health and family
connections.”
The sets were made possible by a donation
from the Friends of the Library.
Stephanie Vokey, co-ordinator of marketing
and public relations at Richmond Public Library, says the launch of the kits is
just one of the ways Canadian Library Month is being celebrated locally. She
says 100 new children’s books were just donated by the Steveston Japanese
Language School Society and now available for checking out.
“They’re extremely vivid and great for those
interested in exploring the language,” Vokey says. “But you don’t need to be
able to speak the language in order to enjoy them. Some of the books are
sensory as well.”
Vokey says the books are already proving to
be very popular, as more than a few have already flew off shelves.
“There’s something about a new book and being
the first person to crack the spine,” she says.
As part of its ongoing efforts to introduce
new resources to the community, Richmond is holding a library card membership
drive this month. All new sign-ups will be entered to win a prize donated by
one of its publisher.
As well, Richmond Public Library is
participating in the national library moments campaign. Canadians across the
country are being urged to share their fondest library memories by using
#librarymoments.
