Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry was somber today as she reported 28 deaths from COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.
All but two of the people who died were elders or seniors living in longterm care homes across BC. This news comes as Henry confirmed the virus is still active in 57 longterm care or assisted living facilities and eight acute care facilities, with 1,875 people currently affected including 1,194 residents and 671 staff.
Henry also announced 723 new cases today, including one that is epidemiologically linked, bringing the province’s total to 40,060. Of the new cases, 135 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 456 in the Fraser Health region, 10 in the Island Health region, 82 in the Interior Health region and 40 in the Northern Health region.
Health Minister Adrian Dix said there were 12,614 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, for a positivity rate of 5.72 per cent. The number of active cases has reached a new record high of 9,524. There are 346 people in hospital, 83 of whom are in critical care. A further 11,947 people are under active public health monitoring.
While the news of a vaccine is positive, with immunizations beginning “very soon,” Henry said there is still a long way to go.
“There will be a time when we can take our masks off, when we can hug our loved ones, when we can travel to see friends and family, when we can be together again,” said Henry. “Let’s stay apart, not because we don’t care for each other, but because we do.”
Local health area data will be published weekly instead of monthly, and updated data showing Richmond’s recent case counts will appear on the BC Centre for Disease Control website today.
