Annual day of giving at Garry Point July 8

A local, non-profit agency centered on
community is hoping July 8 becomes a day of ongoing solidarity.
Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives, which serves
as a hub for volunteering and giving, is introducing Community In Motion to
highlight its fundraising campaign for local charities.
“The idea was to put together a fundraiser
that reaches across the community,” says Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of
Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives. “The other part of this event is to encourage
people to get in motion.”

community-minded Richmond organizations including sponsor Richmond Children
First, the outdoor event from 9 a.m. to noon at Garry Point Park encourages the
public to share in a day of living and giving. Walk, run or bike over to the park
and make a $1 donation, which will be distributed among the participating
charities. The goal is to raise more than $5,000 in total.
Each of the 12 or so charities will have an
information booth on site, with information on their programs, services and
volunteer opportunities.
Gavsie extends a bouquet to Richmond Cares,
Richmond Gives’ general manager Jocelyn Wong, with whom the idea originated.
“Jocelyn has taken the lead from ground zero,”
he says, noting her other efforts over the past decade have further helped the
agency to grow and move forward.
With summer being an ideal time to get
active, organizers of Community In Motion are encouraging participants to walk,
run or bike to the park along one of three routes—a one-kilometre stretch, a
five-kilometre stretch, and a 10-kilometre stretch—set up around the park and
West Dyke Trail. A healthy snack will be awarded to all finishers.
For the little ones, there will be an added
bonus: face-painting and a community treasure hunt.
Leading up to the event, an online
fundraising campaign will be held with a chance to donate to any of the 11
participating charities.
There is no cost to attend the July 8 event,
but organizers request you registering online info@rcrg.org to assist in planning
for the event.
