Richmond’s COVID cases nearly doubled last week

Last week (Nov. 28 to Dec. 4), Richmond recorded 65 new cases of COVID-19—nearly double the previous week’s tally of 35.
The last time the local number was above 60 was the week of Sept. 19 to 25, when there were 68 cases. It peaked at 272 in early April.
Health officials reported 341 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 221,576 cases.
Of the new cases, 61 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 83 in the Fraser Health region, 98 in the Island Health region, 70 in the Interior Health region, 29 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
There are 2,915 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 220 of those people are hospitalized, 73 of whom are in intensive care.
To date, 8,889,167 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,094,539 of those are second doses and 542,409 are third doses.
This means that 91.8 per cent of adults, 91.4 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 85.9 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 88.8 per cent of adults, 88.3 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 82.1 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses. Thirteen per cent of adults and 12 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.
Sadly, there were nine new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 2,378. Of those who died, three lived in the Fraser Health region, three in the Island Health region, one in the Interior Health region and two in the Northern Health region.
Active outbreaks continue at two long-term care facilities, one assisted or independent living facility and two acute care facilities.
From Dec. 1 to 7, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 57.7 per cent of cases. From Nov. 24 to Dec. 7, they accounted for 63.5 per cent of hospitalizations.
