B.C. health authorities reported 519 new cases of COVID-19 today—the first time the number has topped 500 since Nov. 13.

Additionally, the province has so far confirmed 44 cases of the Omicron variant of concern: 11 in Vancouver Coastal Health (which includes Richmond), 24 in Fraser Health, five in Island Health, three in Interior Health and one in Northern Health. Seven of the 44 people are unvaccinated.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said B.C. is continuing to detect Omicron, and there will be more cases confirmed.

“We have transmission in the community now,” she added.

Henry encouraged people to get their booster dose when they are due as well as rethinking large indoor parties over the holidays—particularly with strangers or people with unknown vaccination statuses.

Of today’s new cases, 106 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 110 in the Fraser Health region, 123 in the Island Health region, 145 in the Interior Health region, 34 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 223,661 cases.

The Island Health region has seen transmission among students at the University of Victoria. So far, 124 cases including four Omicron cases are associated with the university, driven by both a rugby tournament and off-campus social events. The university community has a vaccination rate around 97 per cent.

There are 3,171 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 191 of those people are hospitalized, 81 of whom are in intensive care.

To date, 9,001,045 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,105,425 of those are second doses and 610,196 are third doses.

This means that 91.9 per cent of adults, 91.5 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 86.6 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 89.1 per cent of adults, 88.6 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 82.4 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses. Fourteen per cent of adults and 13 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

There were no new virus-related deaths reported today.

Active outbreaks continue at one long-term care facility, one assisted or independent living facility and one acute care facility.
