A new outbreak of COVID-19 has been discovered at the United Poultry Company in Vancouver, Health Minister Adrian Dix and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Wednesday.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has not recalled any chicken from this plant, but highlights the continued importance of food safety. When cooking, wash hands with soap and water, clean and disinfect surfaces regularly, cook meat thoroughly and avoid potential cross-contamination between cooked and uncooked foods.
New community outbreaks like this one are evidence of how important it is that people stay home if they are sick.
“One of the most important things that we all need to do is to stay home if we are not feeling well, with no exception right now,” said Henry.
Even if you have mild symptoms, stay home to prevent further community outbreaks. She also called on employers to have measures in place to keep employees safe with enhanced cleaning and physical distancing, as well as support for employees to be able to stay home if they are sick.
“We need to have measures in place to keep people safe, to avoid further outbreaks. If we start having these types of outbreaks and spread in our community, we can overwhelm our system, and that’s what we’ve been working so hard to avoid for the last few months,” said Henry.
There have also been three new outbreaks in long-term care and assisted-living facilities, all in the Fraser health region.
Dix and Henry announced 71 new cases for a total of 1,795 confirmed cases in BC. The total number of COVID-19 related deaths is now 90.
