Ramadan is observed annually by Muslims worldwide, and this year Richmond is marking it with an online screening of 2006 feature film American Ramadan.
The free event will take place on May 7 at 7 p.m. The film screening will be followed by a live question and answer discussion with director Naeem Randhawa and some cast members.
The documentary follows the lives of five families and works to counter media stereotypes and illustrate their hopes and challenges. The families’ journeys are accompanied by interviews with Muslim, Jewish and Christian scholars.
Director Randhawa calls the film “a statement of how practicing Muslims are really no different than any other practicing people.”
Although filmed in the US, the film’s view of the contemporary Muslim American experience will resonate locally, given Richmond’s growing Muslim community.
Viewers of all faiths will learn more about the holy month of Ramadan and fasting, and be invited to reflect on the universality of the practice of “Fasting for Faith.”
The event is presented by Richmond-based group Islamic Art British Columbia (in association with Envoy Films), in partnership with the Richmond Media Lab and Richmond Public Library.
