May is Asian Heritage Month, a yearly celebration that provides an opportunity to learn about the achievements of Canadians of Asian descent.

This year, it’s an especially important celebration because of the increasing levels of racism as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. And Richmond schools are doing their part to combat racism and provide educational opportunities.

We are in a unique position to provide opportunities for students to learn about and discuss racism through the lens of Asian Heritage Month,” says Richmond schools superintendent Scott Robinson.

He says a new district program is in the early stages of planning. It will engage students in activities and discussions at all grade levels.

The district is hoping that primary teachers will provide lessons on how people of Asian descent have made valuable contributions to our communities. Secondary teachers will be encouraged to engage their classes in discussion about racism.

Our goal is to help instill a sense of respect for Asian Canadians, and Asian Heritage Month gives us a great opportunity to do that,” says Robinson.
