Islamic Centre to open doors for dinner

‘A Journey Into Islam’ is coming soon to the Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre.
The Richmond mosque is opening its doors on Saturday, Jan. 26 for its eighth annual youth-organized event starting at 5:30 p.m. More than 300 guests including community leaders and professionals are expected to attend this year, with the theme being “Women in Islam.”
Women have historically played a critical role in the development and expansion of the Islamic religion. This year, organizers hope to explore that role, from the inception of faith to modern times. Muslim women have also been community leaders and advocated for change in their societies.
The evening will begin with a demonstration of prayer, followed by a dinner and keynote address by Fatemah Meghjee. Past guests speakers have included Dr. Darrell McLean, Dr. Amyn Sajoo, Itrath Syed and Richmond-Steveston MP Joe Peschisolido.
The overall intent of the evening is for guests to become familiar with Islam and the Muslim community, and to clear misconceptions about important aspects of the religion including Jihad, the Qur’an and Hijab. Topics such as dietary restrictions, the pilgrimage to mecca and an Islamic art museum will also be explored.
