A new program offering rental help to local businesses is being met with optimism by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

While details of the Canadian Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program—announced Thursday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—have yet to be ironed out, chamber president and CEO Matt Pitcairn is looking forward to learning more.

“I know rent relief has been a top concern,” he said. “Here we are halfway through April, with May 1 just around the corner. Businesses need to know what things look like (going forward).”

Pitcairn said in some cases, without major help, some businesses face significantly reducing operations or shutting down.

The emergency rent assistance program is expected to help businesses pay for rent for April, May and June. But the Canadian Chamber of Commerce noted the federal government will need to work with provinces to deliver the program. It also said getting the funds will be key.
